But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.
Matthew 17:27
“We commercial fish,” Todd is known to say. “There’s no time for sport because we don’t play with our food.”
I love to fish and believe a bad day fishing beats a good day…well, doing most anything else. But commercial fishing is hard, cold, exhausting work…and Jesus knew it, too.
That’s why I find this story so interesting.
Jesus told Peter to go fish and said he’d find a coin in the first fish’s mouth. I would love to have seen Peter’s reaction. But surely, if Jesus could make a fish cough up a coin, He could have simply made the money appear out of thin air.
Instead, He utilized Peter’s skill.
We can’t just sit back and expect God – or government, no matter how well meaning – to place everything in our hands. God expects us to take action. He doesn’t drive parked cars.
As we do what we can, He does what we can’t, often moving miraculously. It’s beyond awesome to see God work in this way!
As the saying goes, “God helps those who help themselves.”
