DAILY DEVOTIONAL: Move Past The Comma

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

I sure don’t like to fail, but here I am. When John McCain and I lost to Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2008, it was one of the most public failures you can imagine.

As much as we fought to win that election, it was impossible to know how the nation would change and morph under the leadership of the guy who beat us. Looking back, it sometimes felt less like losing an election and more like losing a country.

Many of you might be discouraged. Often, I’m there with you: my flesh and my heart fail! But the Bible doesn’t give us the option of wallowing too long. You get one comma’s worth of despair before Scripture reminds us: “But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever!”

Sweet Freedom in Action

Today, it’s time to move from the first portion of that sentence uttered by the psalmist to the next. If you are discouraged about the state of our nation, remember God is our strength! Individually and collectively, Chin up. Literally. Look to God.
