As an outspoken activist for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election cycle, Lady Gaga walked into significant expectations when she committed to performing at Super Bowl LI.
But America was pleasantly surprised when, rather than making a statement of division, she chose to make one of unity.
Gaga opened her performance with, of all songs, “God Bless America.”

This is a pretty sharp contrast from the performance we saw from Beyonce last year, who opened with her controversial song, “Formation” and was surrounded by dancers dressed like Black Panthers.
Americans took to Twitter to express how grateful they were for a Super Bowl performance to enjoy, rather than one to talk about:
thank you Gaga for not making that political.

Thank you for non-politics half-time, Super Bowl.
