The Church celebrates ‘Ash Wednesday’ today—the first day of the Lenten season—in remembrance of our origins from the dust of the Earth: “Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return,” (Genesis 3:19).
The Lenten season is a 40-day preparation before Easter, and is a tradition that involves deep prayer and fasting, just as Christ did during His 40 days in the desert prior to the Passion.
Churches across the nation will burn the palm branches used during last year’s Palm Sunday services, and wipe the ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads as both a symbolic and physical sign of the faith.
How are you celebrating Ash Wednesday today?Note: The author of this article has included commentary that expresses an opinion and analysis of the facts.
