Eighteen-year-old Maddi Runkles’ unexpected pregnancy caused her to be suspended by her private Christian school.
She was then denied the opportunity to participate in the graduating ceremony at the school, causing quite the controversy (per Daily Mail):
After discovering she was pregnant in January, Maddi had been banned from attending her Friday graduation ceremony at Heritage Academy, a small private Christian school.
The 4.0 GPA student received a college acceptance letter days before learning she was pregnant.
‘If you would have asked me a few months ago, if I thought my daughter would be in this position today, I would have said, “No way”,’ Maddi’s father Scott Runkles said at the special ceremony, the Herald-Mail reported.
‘I think God and his grace and his mercy, is simply telling us, “I’ve got a different plan for Maddi, I’ve got something bigger for her”,’ the dad said as he struggled to compose himself.
Maddi was honored for her pro-life decision with a college scholarship:
‘We are so proud of Maddi for not only her courage to make a good decision in difficult circumstances, but to be an example to other students in similar situations and challenge Christian schools on their policies towards pregnant students like herself,’ Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, said in a statement.
The pro-life group awarded Maddi with a $16,000 college scholarship at a graduation party at the Runkle home after the ceremony.
At her private graduation, the emotional teen thanked her friends and family for their support:
‘I (just) want to thank every single person in this room,’ Maddi said simply.
‘If it wasn’t for you, I don’t honestly think I could have made it these last two months.’
