And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
Aerosmith’s song “Amazing” emphasizes that life is about the “journey,” not just arriving at the “destination.” Who knew that song held such good theology?
When God led the children of Israel out of Egypt in to the desert, He wanted them to find Him.
Relationship was the goal. Yes, He wants us to come into our “inheritance,” but the “inheritance” that He had in mind was that of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – three men of God who knew Him, and walked with Him. His inheritance to them was that He promised to draw a people unto Himself.
That was the purpose of the journey of Exodus – to prepare God’s people for freedom and a relationship with Him. The destination was not just the “promised land,” but knowing God.
Similarly our life is not an end in itself – it is a a journey of faith and preparation. It’s all about the journey.
