Breaking: Major Airplane Crash Off Coast Of Japan

Three military service members are missing after a military service cargo plane crashed in the Philippine Sea just southeast of Japan, en-route to the USS Ronald Reagan.

The cargo plane failed to reach the aircraft carrier because of what some people believe to be an engine failure, causing the plane to unexpectedly go down; the Japanese Navy is helping in the recovery effort.

Eight passengers were recovered from the crash, per Fox News:

Eight people who were on board the C-2 cargo plane were rescued in “good condition” by U.S. Navy helicopters, according to a statement from the U.S. Navy’s 7th fleet. The aircraft crashed about 575 miles southeast of Okinawa as it was heading from Japan to the aircraft carrier.

The Japanese military is assisting in the recovery of the three who remain missing. The eight personnel who were recovered were found less than an hour after the crash occurred. They are currently being treated on board the aircraft carrier.

The report mentions the C-2 cargo plane is rather outdated and is soon planning to be replaced:

The Navy’s C-2 Greyhound is a cargo plane that delivers passengers and supplies to aircraft carriers at sea. It is a very old aircraft, having first entered service in the late 1960s. It is scheduled to be replaced by the V-22 Osprey in the next few years.

Commander of the 7th Fleet released the following statement concerning the crash:

A United States Navy aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers crashed into the ocean southeast of Okinawa at approximately 2:45 p.m. today.

The names of the crew and passengers are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Personnel recovery is underway and their condition will be evaluated by USS Ronald Reagan medical staff.

The aircraft was en-route to the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), which is currently operating in the Philippine Sea.

USS Ronald Reagan is conducting search and rescue operations. The cause of the crash is not known at this time.
