Breaking: Congress Holds Vote On Trump Impeachment

Democrat Congressman Al Green presented articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

Under congressional impeachment procedures, any member of Congress can present the request for a procedural vote to continue the impeachment proceedings.

The vote pressured all members on Congress to go on record as to whether or not they believe Trump should be impeached – the vote overwhelmingly failed with not even 60 votes in favor of the measure.

Per Politico:

House Democrats overwhelmingly joined Republicans on Wednesday to defeat an attempt to impeach President Donald Trump. But 58 Democrats supported the bid to consider impeachment over the objections of House Democratic leaders, who viewed the measure as a distraction in a Republican-controlled Congress.

The motion to sideline the measure — killing the effort — was approved 364-58, with four Democrats voting present.

Democrat leadership disregarded the vote, saying “now is not the time”:

“Donald John Trump, by causing such harm to the society of the United States is unfit to be president and warrants impeachment, trial and removal from office,” Green said on the House floor as he introduced the articles.

But Green, a seven-term, Houston-area lawmaker, said his conscience compelled him to push forward with the measure, even though he acknowledged he was unlikely to succeed.

“Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment,” Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said in a joint statement, shortly after Green introduced his articles of impeachment.

Fox News reports the vote was to consider articles of impeachment, a motion to proceed, not on actual articles of impeachment:

The symbolic vote had been expected to fail in the Republican-controlled House. It put some lawmakers in competitive districts in a tough spot by forcing them on the record about impeachment.

Lawmakers did not actually vote on the actual articles of impeachment, but on a procedural measure that would have led to a vote on them.
