Breaking: Iranian Parliament Just Passed A Resolution To Counter Trump’s Jerusalem Move

In a response to President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Iran’s Parliament recently recognized the same city as the capital of “Palestine.”

Jerusalem Post reports “the Iranian Parliament bill is part of a double-urgency plan dealing with Jerusalem.”

Here’s more from the Times of Israel:

Iran’s parliament has voted to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, according to state-run media.

The vote, which passed 207-0 in the 290-member Majlis, requires Tehran to recognize Jerusalem as “the everlasting capital of Palestine.”

The vote “comes in response to the recent US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in hopes of dealing a blow to Muslims,” the Turkish Anadolu news agency quoted speaker Ali Larijani as saying.

According to the report, the declaration is a direct response to Trump’s decision to recognize the Holy City as Israel’s capital.

Soon after Trump made his decision, it was met with resistance from regional powers who have historically opposed Israel, including some groups who pledge violence against the country.

For example, Iran threatened to increase military resources to Hamas as a response.

Hamas is recognized by the State Department as a foreign terrorist organization:

Earlier this week, Hamas’s leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, said that a senior Iranian military commander pledged all of the Islamic Republic’s military resources to help the Gaza-based terror group fight Israel over Jerusalem.

“All our of capabilities and potential are at your disposal in the battle for the defense of Jerusalem,” Sinwar said that Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ elite Quds Force, told him over the phone.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took a swipe at Trump over social media.

He tweeted, “Reagan was both wiser and more powerful than Trump.”

“They took measures against Iran: they shot down one of our passenger aircrafts,” he continued, “But where is Reagan, and how powerful is the Islamic Republic now?”

He added, “U.S. govt spends a tremendous amount of money on sowing discord among people, and takes up the wealth of rich rulers in the region.”

And, “By God’s Grace— they should know— we will progress powerfully. By God’s will, we will disappoint U.S. on all arenas.”

The Hill adds more context concerning the tweets:

Khamenei’s first tweet refers to the July 1988 crash of Iran Air flight 655, which was shot down by a U.S. guided missile over Iranian airspace under orders from the U.S. military.

The Reagan administration explained the incident at the time as an error caused by U.S. warships identifying the flight incorrectly as an incoming Iranian military aircraft.

The U.S. reached a settlement at the International Criminal Court over the incident in 1996 and paid more than $60 million in compensation, but did not admit fault.
