Mark Wahlberg, an outspoken Catholic, posted a selfie with his wife after receiving their ‘Ash Wednesday’ ashes this morning.

Check it out:

The Church celebrates ‘Ash Wednesday’ today—the first day of the Lenten season—in remembrance of our origins from the dust of the Earth: “Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return,” (Genesis 3:19).

The Lenten season is a 40-day preparation before Easter, and is a tradition that involves deep prayer and fasting, just as Christ did during His 40 days in the desert prior to the Passion.

Churches across the nation will burn the palm branches used during last year’s Palm Sunday services, and wipe the ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads as both a symbolic and physical sign of the faith.

How are you celebrating Ash Wednesday today?

  1. Was born in northern MN out “in the country”. My parents couldn’t attend Ash Wednesday services one year for snowy and icy roads, but insisted my brother and I take our Bombardier Ski Doo and go, We were in our mid teens. We road through woods and a few miles across a frozen lake into town, a small one. Before we left, we went downstairs into our basement and called our cousin. She lived in town. Told her we were coming and wanted to give her the envelope she could place in the collection basket. Back in the day, the church published records of total annual contributions made per family.

We accomplished the hand off and headed for our intended destination, the outside hockey rink. All of us knew there was too much snow to play so we all gathered in the warming shack — wood floor, roaring pot-belly stove — and smoked cigarettes. It came time to leave and one of our buddies, also having skipped church, conducted a service, took some ashes out from the stove and crossed all of our foreheads. My brother and I headed back home. Our parents none the wiser.
