Philly’s New “Soda Tax” Backfires In HUGE Way, Here’s How..

New tax implementation by Philadelphia is having immediately negative consequences.

A local spokesperson for Pepsi says the “soda tax” passed last summer is causing Pepsi to have to re-evaluate some expenditures (per Daily Signal):

“Unfortunately, after careful consideration of the economic realities created by the recently enacted beverage tax, we have been forced to give notice that we intend to eliminate 80 to 100 positions, including frontline and supervisory roles,” Pepsi spokesman Dave DeCecco said, according to Philly.com.

DeCecco was quick to offer a remedy:

“If the tax is struck down or repealed, we plan to bring people back to work,” DeCecco said, according to Reuters.

It is easy to see how this tax could cause a loss of revenue, as the Daily Signal reports:

The tax, passed in June 2016 by the Philadelphia City Council, adds 1.5 cents to every ounce of liquid, which amounts to an 18-cent tax for a 12-ounce can of soda and a $2.16 tax for a 12-pack of soda.

  1. The Soviet Socialist People’s DemonKKKraptik Republik of Phillystan is playing copycat to New Yorkistan’s tyrannies. Hey, Phillystanis! Y’all’s Johnny-come-lately! Have you no imagination within y’all’s thick skulls‽ Did all intelligence fade with the passing of our Founders and Framers? Did y’all’s constituents *really* want this tax?

Time to tie y’all’s non-“representatives” to concrete blocks, throw ’em in the Schuylkill River and see if they float. If they do, keep ’em, ’cause those who float are the good’uns!

  2. Understandable response from Pepsi. If the people of Philly were smart, they would vote the politicians out of office that threaten jobs via their ill-conceived, social engineering statutes.

  3. It is about time the citizens of Philly voted out the whole group that wants to re-engineer the social system to their concepts of which they do not have to follow.
You, the elected, should by law be make to follow every stupid, inefficient law, rule, statute, etc., that you impose on the rest of us…………..and that goes for The U.S. Congress also. Does Obamacare come to mind for anyone????

  4. All of the beverage companies should take the bull by the horn and not sell one drop of their product within the City Limits to any grocery, quick shop, restaurant, liquor store or entertainment venue till this tax is rescinded.

  5. Democrats never tire of imposing more nanny taxes on people. They never take into account the negative consequences of their policies. I would bet there are a lot of people who are buying soda by the crate just outside the city limits.
