For the first time, scientists in Britain have been granted a license to create babies from the DNA of 3 people.

Yup, you read that right.

Here are the details.

From CBS News:

Britain’s Newcastle University says its scientists have received a license to create babies using DNA from three people, the first time such approval has been granted.

The license was granted by the country’s fertility regulator on Thursday, according to the university.’

In December, British officials approved the “cautious use” of the techniques, which are intended to prevent women from passing on fatal genetic diseases to their children. The new procedures fix problems linked to mitochondria, the energy-producing structures outside a cell’s nucleus. Faulty mitochondria can result in conditions including muscular dystrophy and major organ failure.

In Britain, leaders disagreed heatedly on the issue while it was up for debate in the House of Commons, with some raising concerns about “designer babies” and “playing God.” Leading churches in Britain – both Protestant and Catholic – opposed the procedure on religious and ethical grounds, they said.

Definitely a slippery slope.

What do you think about this?

Let us know below.

  1. Let me get this straight, unborn children are being aborted to the tune of some 3000+ per day in the USA alone, so they are going to start “creating” children?
Time to disband the “fertility regulator”!

  2. Genetic disease is a blessing in disguise. My genetic hearing loss has taught me a fair bit, made a better man of me. Wouldn’t give it up.

Not going to worry if pass this to any of my children (If I marry), but that is God’s decision.

  3. i will only agree if it for the purposed of fixing something that has a high chance of being passed on to the child by the parent so that the child can have the chance of being born with a chance for a full life without sickness or on goign ill health on the other hand using for the purpose of having a designer baby than i would have to say hell no i am not for it and say that is where i draw the line

  4. Just who is the UK’s “fertility regulator”, anyway? And who was it that bestowed his powers to him…..this is where the problem lies.
