Escalating tensions in the South China Sea may soon be a focus of President Donald Trump and his administration.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis recognizes China’s bullying dominance of the region.

Per Independent Journal Review:

Addressing China’s rampant territorial expansion efforts in the South China Sea, Mattis accused Beijing of, “shredding trust as they adopt a tribute-nation kind of approach where all other nations have to pay tribute or acquiescence to the more powerful nation, the larger nation.”

Mattis surely notices China’s intensifying hostility:

Mattis labeled the actions of the Chinese as “increasingly confrontational,” in reference to behavior in the South China Sea. The increasingly tense situation has China claiming sovereignty over the territory, while the United States and other countries in the region dispute those claims.

The United States is postured for diplomacy, but rejects any military escalation:

During a February trip to Asia, Sec. Mattis stressed the need for a diplomatic resolution to increasing tensions between the U.S. and China, saying, “At this time, we do not see any need for dramatic military moves at all.”
