For the Lord’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance. In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye.
My mom found salvation in the Jesus Movement of the 1970s. In those days, it wasn’t fire and brimstone scaring the hell out of folks, but the love of God drawing them into a great big community of grace. As part of an active Irish Catholic family, we’d all been baptized Catholic. Mom started watching Billy Graham crusades, and she loved the combined message of tradition and personal relationship with Christ; her passion for the faith led us all into something new. The message she received? God’s crazy about you and can heal your hurts. Mom and millions of others turned to Jesus because they heard God not only loves them, but He really, really likes them! She still glows when she talks about Him.
The God who likes us never sleeps. He keeps loving watch over us every moment of every day because we are the delight of His heart. We didn’t earn it – I don’t deserve it – but He’s always had it for us, even before we knew Him.
The prophet Zephaniah says God sings and dances over you with great joy (Zeph. 3:17)! God’s emotions for His friends are expressed in the Song of Solomon – such confirming chapters to read.
