The Department of Justice announced alarming statistics this week, saying that non-citizens being held in federal prisons cost the government roughly $1.2 billion annually, per Lifezette.

The number was calculated by multiplying the number of foreign-born inmates who are not citizens—41,554, in most recent reports—multiplied by the cost per inmate in the federal prison system.

Check it out:

Even after subtracting out foreign-born prisoners who now are U.S. citizens, the federal prison population still is about 22 percent immigrant.

“It is a startling percentage, even when you consider some of these are people who are incarcerated for immigration violations,” said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies. “These high numbers show you there is a nexus between illegal immigration and crime.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said in the past that immigrant crime is an expensive burden on our federal government, and has stressed that this is why it’s so important we seal the border and increase the enforcement of immigration laws in general.
