Vice President Mike Pence, in his commencement speech at Notre Dame on Sunday, praised the University for being a “vanguard of freedom of expression.” Vice President Pence also had some harsh words for movements on college campuses throughout the country seeking to suppress speech they disagree with.

“This university is a vanguard of freedom of expression,” the vice president said, “and the free exchange of ideas at a time, sadly, when free speech and civility are waning on campuses across America.”
Pence spoke very highly of how opposing views and open discussion are encouraged on campus, even referencing how “every speaker, no matter how unpopular or unfashionable, is afforded the right to air their views in the open for all to hear.”
Pence’s statements are similar to those made by Barack Obama back in 2015 when he lamented how college students “have to be coddled and protected from different points of view.”
