Amazing Grace: Honoring The Fallen This Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend, Americans will be barbecuing, hitting the pools, and enjoying an extra day off from work. The patriots among us will also be remembering our military members who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Originating as Decoration Day after the Civil War in 1868, Memorial Day gives us all a chance to honor those who died for this exceptional nation.

Visiting grave sites and attending memorial services and parades not only pays proper respect to our armed forces but it also shows children and many adults for that matter, what it truly means to call the home of the brave home.

On Memorial Day, our grand flag is swiftly raised to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains until noon. Old Glory is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. This is an example of powerful symbolism. Americans from Berkeley to Yale should take note.

Patriotic rocker Dave Bray, a veteran himself, is honoring the service members we’ve lost with a heartfelt rendition of “Amazing Grace”. The video below reminds us how fortunate we all are to live in America. It also shows us our freedom is far from free.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying ourselves this weekend. In fact, those who’ve died in uniform, gave us that very opportunity. But along with the get togethers and burgers, let’s not forget what Memorial Day is really all about. We owe so much to our military members who didn’t make it home. On Memorial Day, let’s honor each and every one of them. It really is the least we can do.
