Congressman Brad Wenstrup and Senator Jeff Flake were the first to treat Congressman Steve Scalise after he was shot by a gunman at a congressional baseball practice.

Wenstrup, an Iraq War veteran, served as a surgeon in Iraq before joining Congress.

Per CNN Politics:

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake added that he saw a member of Scalise’s security detail return fire on the gunman for what felt like 10 minutes, even though the police officer was wounded in the leg.
“50 (shots) would be an understatement, I’m quite sure,” Flake said when asked about the total amount of gunfire, including police returning fire.
Flake said two members of Scalise’s security detail were wounded, and another man was wounded in the chest.
Flake and Wenstrup both assisted Scalise’s gunshot wound, per Cincinnati:

Rep. Steve Scalise, of Louisiana, was shot, Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama told CNN. Rep. Brad Wenstrup, of Columbia Tusculum, used some kind of scissors to cut through Scalise’s pant leg to get to his wound, Brooks said. Wenstrup is a podiatrist who served as a combat surgeon in Iraq.

“After the shooter was down … we deferred to (Wenstrup’s) judgment on what to do,” Brooks told CNN. Wenstrup “was getting some kind of scissors device to cut through the pants” to get to the wound on Scalise.

Brooks said they were trying to get liquids into Scalise as Wenstrup cared for him. “We were very lucky” to have Wenstrup there, Brooks said.

Flake explains the details of the incident:

“I was the first out to Steve,” Flake said, and then Wenstrup arrived. “We applied pressure on the wound. He was coherent the whole time.”

“I got Steve Scalise’s phone and called his wife,” Flake told CNN. He said he didn’t want her to hear Scalise had been shot via the news.
