But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.
Before the 2008 vice presidential debate, I contemplated the nearly seventy million people watching that night, and I was anxious to finally speak to important issues. The campaign warned me not to go rogue. “Just follow the script.” Eh, I knew that wouldn’t work.
Beforehand, backstage, my only prayer partner was little Piper.
“Come here, honey!” I grabbed her hands and we closed our eyes.
“God, I ask you to just speak right through me tonight,” I prayed. “Amen.”
Piper looked up suspiciously. “Mom,” she whispered, “that’d be cheating!”
Peter and John were threatened when they spoke. Their speech wasn’t the problem; it was what they were speaking: the name of Jesus.
Conservatives are accustomed to liberals seeking to control the conversation. When the liberals’ arguments cannot withstand debate, they try to silence “offensive” speech and attempt to make you exchange your freedom of speech for their comfort.
But Peter and John refused comfort, choosing rather to boldly proclaim Christ.
May we do the same.
Sweet Freedom in Action
Today, as political correctness and pressure abound, ask God for boldness to speak. Sacrifice your own comfort to proclaim the matchless name of Jesus. Go rogue.
