DAILY DEVOTIONAL: A New Name Only For You

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.
Revelation 2:17

My son Track came home after his first day of kindergarten, threw his backpack on the ground, and said, “We’re changing my name to something normal!” Apparently, the other kids made fun of this name, and he wanted to fit in. “So call me ‘Colt’.”

I guess “normal” is subjective.

Years later, when he was an army infantryman, top brass, cognizant of Track’s unwanted attention due to his public profile, slapped a name patch on his uniform that read “Nunya” instead of “Palin.” As in: Nunya business.

It’s interesting to consider how in Revelation we are promised a new, secret name. What does that mean? Dan Allender explained, “To know God, we must know the name God will call us. Our name is held secret from others and even from ourself until we are in God’s presence. But our life is a long, odd, glorious journey to hear the name God will one day speak to us.”

Sweet Freedom in Action
Let’s pray that we live this odd, glorious journey called life in such a way that God will one day call us Faithful. May we not lose hope but press forward in doing good.
