President Donald Trump has responded to Russia’s expulsion of several hundred U.S. diplomats from the country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin kicked out 755 diplomats and their staff after Trump signed into law sanctions against the country.

In an unusual response, Trump simply thanked him.

Per Reuters:

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for slashing the number of U.S. diplomatic staff in Russia, “because now we have a smaller payroll.”

“I want to thank him because we’re trying to cut down our payroll and as far as I’m concerned I’m very thankful that he let go of a large number of people,” Trump told reporters at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. “There’s no real reason for them to go back.”

Trump is seeing the cut as a reduction to the size of the federal government, a goal he is committed to achieving.

In his first six months, Trump has cut almost 11,000 federal employees.
