A newly-released email from Susan Rice, apparently detailing a meeting between herself, outgoing President Obama, and former FBI Director James Comey on the day of President Trump’s inauguration, is raising new questions regarding why Comey might not have disclosed the meeting in his testimony before the Senate, according to Fox News.
In an opening statement to the Senate Intelligence Committee last year, the former FBI director downplayed past meetings with President Obama, clarifying that he’d only met with him alone twice during his career as director of the FBI.
Check it out:
“I spoke alone with President Obama twice in person (and never on the phone) – once in 2015 to discuss law enforcement policy issues and a second time, briefly, for him to say goodbye in late 2016,” Comey said in his written statement.
Yet Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., earlier this week released an email Rice sent to herself on Inauguration Day 2017, detailing an Oval Office meeting held Jan. 5 with Obama, Comey, then-Vice President Joe Biden, then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates and herself.
Based on Rice’s email, it appears the meeting was about the Russia investigation.
“President Obama began the conversation by stressing his continued commitment to ensuring that every aspect of this issue is handled by the Intelligence and law enforcement communities ‘by the book,’” Rice wrote. “The president stressed that he is not asking about, initiating or instructing anything from a law enforcement perspective. He reiterated that our law enforcement team needs to proceed as it normally would by the book.”
The email in and of itself is not technically a contradiction of Comey’s testimony, but it raises many questions about why he might have omitted it before the Senate.
In a letter pressing Rice for an explanation of the email, Grassley and Graham posed several other questions regarding Comey’s role in the meeting. Specifically, they asked whether Comey mentioned potential press coverage of the controversial anti-Trump dossier and whether he described the FBI’s relationship with dossier author, former British spy Christopher Steele.
Here’s a few social media reactions:
Dear Susan Rice,
People who do things “by the book” don’t email themselves about doing things by the book.

Susan Rice sent this email to herself after Obama was out of office. The timestamp is 12:15pm, his term ended 15 minutes earlier, after she no longer had a job. What did she learn b/t Jan. 5th & Jan. 20th that caused her to want to rewrite the narrative about the WH meeting? pic.twitter.com/6AHW6kFtQ0
