Happening Now: Mike Pompeo Was Just Sworn In As Secretary Of State

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was officially sworn in during a ceremony on Wednesday morning. He was accompanied by President Trump, Vice President Pence and members of the State Department.

President Trump shared complimentary remarks about the new secretary of state, calling him “Mike.”

“Mike is a true American patriot,” Trump said. “This day is a testament to your exceptional skill, Mike. We are profoundly grateful for everything you do for our country and you’ll be doing things that you don’t even know about.”

And, “Secretary Pompeo, congratulations again. I have no doubt that you will make America proud as our nation’s chief diplomat.”

Pompeo also spoke during the ceremony, sharing a new vision and direction for the State Department

“Thank you for the weighty and awesome responsibility to serve the American people,” Pompeo said. “We will implement tough diplomacy to put the American people first. I and my staff will make sure American will always be a respectable leader on the world stage.”

Speaking of continued conflicts and international situations, Pompeo said, “We put a hurt on the ISIS caliphate in Iraq and Syria… We will move our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, years ahead of schedule.”

And, regarding North Korea: “One thing is certain, this administration will not repeat the mistakes of the past. Our eyes are wide open, and it is time to solve this once and for all. A bad deal is not an option. The American people are counting on us to get this right.”

Pompeo added, “This responsibility comes more sobering than we consider the many threats to our prosperity, security and liberty. Mr. President, I promise you, my team and I will be unrelenting in confronting those threats,”

Pompeo again thanked the President for allowing him to lead the CIA and said he was honored to lead the “world’s finest intelligence community.” He said he is also thankful to lead the “world’s finest diplomatic corps.”

The nation’s top diplomat said he wants the State Department to get its “swagger back” and to better represent the “greatest civilization in all of the world” across the globe.

As BBC reports, the U.S. Senate voted 57 to 42 in favor of approving Pompeo as America’s top diplomat. The new secretary of state is the second of the Trump presidency as Pompeo’s predecessor, Rex Tillerson, was fired in March.

Here’s more on Pompeo:

Mike Pompeo is a man of action and all indications are he plans to be out front as Secretary of State. As a Trump loyalist and foreign policy hawk he’s the exact opposite of his predecessor Rex Tillerson.

But he aims to use the former to gain clout amongst the key Cabinet and White House players determining America’s relations with the world. And on the latter he’s tried to convince senators that he’ll pursue “relentless diplomacy.”

He’s been at it already with his secret trip to North Korea, and can be expected to continue to take the lead in preparing for the summit between Trump and Kim Jong-un. But he believes the administration’s hardline approach of sanctions backed by the credible threat of force is what forced the North Korean leader to the table and has pledged to maintain the pressure until the talks yield concrete results.

He doesn’t like the Iran nuclear deal but says he’d prefer to fix it rather than scrap it. Democrats are sceptical, but he’ll have a lot of work to do if Trump does abandon the accord, since there’s no set formula for what that would mean.

Pompeo has also pledged to restore the State department’s “swagger” in the wake of Tillerson’s disastrous management of the building, and is already focused on filling the many vacancies.
