BREAKING: Nikki Haley Resigns…

President Trump has announced that United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley has resigned.

The announcement was made in the White House Oval Office on Tuesday morning after Trump first teased it online.

As the Associated Press reports, Haley will continue to serve at her post until the end of the year.

Trump spoke as he and Haley met in the Oval Office, shortly after word came of her plans to resign.

He called Haley a “very special” person, adding that she told him six months ago that she might want to take some time off. Trump said that together, they had “solved a lot of problems.”

No reason for the resignation was immediately provided.

Haley, 46, was appointed to the U.N. post in November 2016 and last month coordinated Trump’s second trip to the United Nations, including his first time chairing the U.N. Security Council.

Before she was named by Trump to her U.N. post, Haley was governor of South Carolina, the first woman to hold the post. She was re-elected in 2014.

Trump said he hopes to have named a replacement for Haley within two to three weeks, Reuters reports.

During the White House presser, Haley said she was ready “to take a little time off,” a comment she reportedly made to Trump six months ago.

The resignation comes amid rumors of there being a coordinated resistance within the administration led by a senior official. While she has admitted to not agreeing with Trump on everything, she said she approves of most of his decisions and the direction he is taking the country.  The announcement that she is leaving the administration comes just ahead of a consequential congressional election and she is the latest official to leave an administration which has struggled to maintain consistency.

Politico reports the resignation comes as a surprise to many on the right:

She has been a forceful presence at the U.N., and recently oversaw the U.S. withdrawing from the U.N. Human Rights Council.

The resignation was closely held and came as a surprise to many in the field. “What?? Nikki Haley? No, I am amazed,” one veteran GOP foreign policy hand who has advised Haley said.

Haley had said in April that her relationship with Trump was “perfect.”

And, from Fox News Insider:

Special Report host Bret Baier said on America’s Newsroom that he believes Haley did not resign for a negative reason, calling it “surprising.”

“She has been as someone who has really stood up for Trump foreign policy. Every aspect of it,” he said.
