NRA Throws Full Support Behind Brett Kavanaugh In New Ad

While Judge Brett Kavanaugh is eagerly awaiting his confirmation vote to the United States Supreme Court, which could be as late as October, he has picked up the support of the National Rifle Association. The nation’s largest gun lobby vocalized their support for Kavanaugh in a new ad titled, “The Deciding Vote.”

The ad features NRA’s Chris Cox, chief lobbyist and principal political strategist, who explains there are currently four Supreme Court Justices who would vote to rid Americans of their right to bear and keep firearms. Four of them, Cox says, would uphold the Second Amendment right. The ninth vote is retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is to be replaced by Kavanaugh.

“Let me ask you a simple question. Do you believe you have a right to defend yourself and your family with a firearm in your own home?” Cox, said in the ad, as Daily Wire reports. “Four Supreme Court justices say you do, but four say you don’t … because the deciding vote announced he’s retiring.”

Cox then cautions: “Your most fundamental right to self-defense could be extinguished.”

From Daily Wire:

Cox is, of course, referencing the 2008 Heller decision in which outgoing justice Kennedy provided the swing vote on whether or not the 2nd Amendment was an individual right, meant to protect private ownership of a firearm.

As the Left goes on ad nauseam about precedent regarding Roe, they have been waiting for the first opportunity to get a 5-4 decision in the opposite direction on guns. This is not some cooked up right-wing fantasy, it’s reality, the NRA says.

Cox infers Kavanaugh is the man for the position to help protect Americans and their right to own a gun.

“This is our opportunity to protect the one freedom and guarantees all the others, the freedom that makes America different from every other country on earth,” Cox added. “The Second Amendment is at stake. America is at stake.”

“We don’t care if we’re the last one in the arena. We will never, ever stop fighting for this freedom,” Cox concluded. “We are the National Rifle Association of America, and we are freedom’s safest place.”

Here’s more on Kavanaugh, from NRA-ILA:

NRA members can feel confident throwing their enthusiastic support behind President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. Throughout his time on the bench, Judge Kavanaugh has demonstrated deep respect for the Second Amendment as construed in Justice Antonin Scalia’s landmark decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. Moreover, his record on the Second Amendment is well established. As Second Amendment scholar and University of Denver Law Professor Dave Kopel wrote earlier this week, “No nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court has had such a detailed record on Second Amendment as does Brett Kavanaugh.”

The bulk of Judge Kavanaugh’s record on the Second Amendment comes from his 2011 dissent in Heller v. District of Columbia, or Heller II. The case concerned a challenge to Washington, D.C.’s ban on commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles and the city’s onerous firearms registration regime.
