Some people are claiming Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s subpoena threat of Donald Trump Jr. could constitute a violation of House ethics rules.
The two clashed when Trump Jr. shared a meme that contended Americans would be forced to eat their pet dogs should Venezuelan socialist programs and policies were implemented in the United States.
Ocasio-Cortez, a self-identified socialist, responded to the joke by saying as a rising member of Congress she would use congressional power to subpoena Trump Jr.
“I have noticed that Junior here has a habit of posting nonsense about me whenever the Mueller investigation heats up,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Please, keep it coming Jr – it’s definitely a ‘very, very large brain’ idea to troll a member of a body that will have subpoena power in a month. Have fun!”
Several people are arguing the comment violates the House Ethics Manual that each new member of Congress is responsible for reading, or referencing, ahead of their time in office and during their tenure.
From the Federalist:
Now, in a perfect world, we’d be holding debates about the merits of state-controlled economies versus markets via more dignified forums and mediums, but that’s not how things go in 2018. Not only is this all absurdly juvenile, but Ocasio-Cortez should be aware that, per page 150 of the House Ethics Manual, “Members…are not to take or withhold any official action on the basis of the campaign contributions or support of the involved individuals, or their partisan affiliation. Members and staff are likewise prohibited from threatening punitive action on the basis of such considerations.”
Here’s more from the Daily Caller:
Commenters online are calling for an ethics investigation into Democratic Socialist Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez after she threatened Donald Trump Jr. for posting a meme making fun of her.
Donald Trump Jr. shared a meme that featured Ocasio-Cortez on his Instagram that claimed the policies of socialism will cause Americans to eat their dogs. The meme shows two images: one of Ocasio-Cortez with the text, “Why are you so afraid of a socialist economy?” and another image beneath Ocasio-Cortez of President Donald Trump with an overlay of text saying, “Because Americans want to walk their dogs, not eat them.”
Some people who commented claimed Ocasio-Cortez’s line was certainly a threat, albeit an empty one and could be a violation of the ethics rule:
Ocasio-Cortez later tried walking back the threat by saying it was more of an empty threat: she would like to subpoena Trump Jr., but is not allowed under legislative rules to do so.
“For the GOP crying that this is a ‘threat’ – I don’t have power to subpoena anybody,” she tweeted. “Congress as a body, GOP included, has the power. No indiv. member can issue a subpoena unless they are a Chair (which, as a freshman, I can assure you I will not be). Also must be under purview.”
