Joshua Trump, 11, has reportedly told his middle school administrators that he no longer wants to be associated with his surname after members of the school relentlessly bullied him.
“They curse at him, they call him an idiot, they call him stupid,” Joshua’s mother, Megan Trump, said to ABC Philadelphia station WPVI, via ABC News.
“He was getting ridiculed and bullied for the fact that his last name was Trump,” said his father, Bobby Berto, per ABC 13.
Now, Joshua is looking to use his father’s surname to avoid the bullying.
Joshua “hates himself, and he hates his last name, and he feels sad all the time,” Meghan Trump said, per ABC News. “He doesn’t want to live feeling like that anymore, and, as a parent, that’s scary.”
While the Delaware locals are not related to the president, Trump said her son has repeatedly suffered at the hands of the school’s bullies because of the name—ever since Trump’s inauguration.
This is not the first time the family has been forced to make a major life adjustment over the bullying, as the family previously pulled Joshua from public schooling.
“I pulled him out of school and home-schooled him for a year,” Berto said, per the report.
“This year, Joshua was moving into middle school, so his parents thought things would change,” ABC 13 reported.
But, it didn’t:
Joshua’s parents say the bullying didn’t stop.
Mayer says after a recent meeting with Joshua’s parents, there was an investigation. He says five students were identified and disciplined.
“They were apologetic and they did say that they were sorry,” Mayer said.
The school has agreed to immediately change Joshua’s last name to his father’s name in their system.
They are also working on providing him extra support so he feels comfortable reporting any future incidents.
Some people online were quick to express support for Joshua:
