The federal government was forced to undergo a shutdown after lawmakers and President Trump were unable to reach a deal on how much money should be allocated for the construction of a border wall and border security.
These lawmakers are continuing to get paid amid the shutdown, despite having a responsibility to keep the government functioning.
So where are these lawmakers when they ought to be in Washington D.C. doing the jobs that taxpayers pay them to do?
As Business Insider reports, House Democrat Nancy Pelosi was caught vacationing in Hawaii.
The House Minority leader is likely having a better vacation than you are.
According to the Hawaii Reporter (via Drudge), Nancy Pelosi is spending her Christmas at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu on Hawaii. And this has become something of a tradition for her. For the last two years, she has reportedly stayed in the resort’s $10,000-a-night suite.
So in case you think the Democrats will escape the pain of the Millionaire’s Tax they’re advocating, rest assured–this one, at least, will be eating her own dog food.
The House Leader, who is expected to become the next Speaker, is reportedly looking to lie low amid the shutdown and not strike a deal with Trump to increase her chances of winning the speakership.
Fox News’ Chad Pergram recently quoted Office of Budget and Management Director and Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney who said Pelosi even convinced Schumer not to make a deal.
A tweet from Pergram read: “Mulvaney on Fox: I met with Ldr Schumer last Saturday..& my gut was that he was really interested in doing a deal and coming to some sort of compromise. But the more we’re hearing this week is that it’s Nancy Pelosi who’s preventing that from happening.”
Pergram added: “WH’s Sanders says Pelosi is ‘more willing to protect that (the Speakership)than she is to protect our borders and to protect American’s lives.'”
Here’s more from Mulvaney, via the Daily Caller:
Note: The author of this article has included commentary that expresses an opinion and analysis of the facts.
“Chuck Schumer voted for border security in 2006,” Mulvaney explained, drawing attention to the fact that Democrats haven’t always been against controlling the border. “He voted for it again I think in 2011. It seems like Democrats really like border security when there is a Democrat in office and don’t like it when Donald Trump is in office.”
Although Schumer seemed to be willing to come to “some sort of compromise” the last time they met, “the more we’re hearing this week is that it is Nancy Pelosi who is preventing that from happening,” Mulvaney explained.
When asked about any behind the scenes negotiations possibly taking place, Mulvaney said, “No, they left town” during the shutdown and in time for the holidays:
And I think the reason they did is because Nancy Pelosi, in fairness, does not have the votes for the speakership yet. She cannot be seen by her party as being weak on negotiating with Donald Trump. So we fully expect that until she is elected speaker and has locked that vote up, we don’t expect to hear from the Democrats again. They told us last night that they were not countering our last offer.
