In a tweet on Wednesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) responded for the first time to President Trump’s dubbing her “Pocahontas”—and social media users are losing it.
In the post, Warren suggested an examination of the true story of Pocahontas, rather than one that’s been told as a fairytale by Walt Disney Co. and children’s books.

I’ve noticed that when my name comes up, @realDonaldTrump likes to talk about Pocahontas. So I figured, let’s talk about Pocahontas. Not the tale that's been twisted for centuries – but the real Pocahontas, and her story of heroism. And bravery. And pain. @NCAI1944 #ECWS2018

I also told the story of my parents, because they were real people too. The love they shared, the struggles they endured, the family they built, & the story they lived will always be a part of me. No one – not even the President – will ever take that part of me away. #ECWS2018

And today I made a promise to @NCAI1944 tribal leaders: Every time someone brings up my family’s story, I’m going to use it to lift up the story of their families & communities. Read my full remarks here. https://t.co/385viifuyY #ECWS2018

Here’s a few responses from social media:
Elizabeth Warren's "Pocahontas" speech today is a big deal.
This section — which ends in a swing at Trump — turns a former Harvard Law professor into an Oklahoma girl who grew up poor.
We'll hear a version of this constantly if she runs in 2020. https://t.co/pTwJ7pnc8O pic.twitter.com/EJl15hl84F

This is really interesting: @SenWarren tackles the Cherokee heritage issue with forceful Pocahontas speech in surprise visit with tribal association.https://t.co/SSb04UTVRI

Elizabeth Warren LIED about her ‘Native American heritage’ and EXPLOITED Affirmative Action programs
But the REAL story is: ‘Trump saying Pocahontas is insensitive’https://t.co/Ibt6ppYr6S

BREAKING: Elizabeth Warren just took the stage at the National Congress of American Indians. In a surprise appearance, she plans to forcefully rebut Trump’s use of “Pocahontas” as a slur, address the issue of her heritage more directly, and pledge to work on Native issues. pic.twitter.com/SIP00peTNB

Warren: My story of growing up as a poor girl in Oklahoma is a complicated and rich tapestry as old as the American experience itself. Like many families searching for our identity in this great country
Trump: Take a DNA test, Pocahontas
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) February 14, 2018
And Trump will respond by calling her Pocahontas 30 times a day and demanding she take a DNA test. https://t.co/RKHCLpwrFF

What ever Warren .She wants justice go help the hundreds of Southern Utes in Colorado who have proven having Southern Ute blood and are not being allowed to enroll in the tribes census rolls because of their birth date. This discrimination has been approved since the 1970’s by the U.S. government’s approval of the Southern Ute Tribe’s constitution. Go prove it warren how much Native American blood you do have? If not, shut the hell up. We don’t really care about your heritage.
