Former Presidential Hopeful Says Something About The U.S.-North Korea Meeting That No One Was Expecting

Florida Senator Marco Rubio said North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was never serious about forming a peace deal with the United States and that the negotiations were just a “show.”

Rubio predicted Jong-Un does not want to denuclearize his arsenal and was instead trying to give off the impression that he is a reasonable leader.

“I remain convinced that he does not want to denuclearize, in fact, he will not denuclearize. But he wants to give off this perception that he is this open leader, he is peaceful, he is reasonable, and that’s why you see they basically stopped talking to us for two weeks,” Rubio said, as Washington Examiner reports.

Rubio, who is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Kim has an “emotional and a personal, psychological attachment” to his nuclear weapons” because they make him feel “prestigious.”

The Florida lawmaker supported Trump’s Thursday decision to cancel the June 12 summit in Singapore with Kim. In explaining his move, Trump cited threatening public remarks from the authoritarian nation’s leaders. The summit, announced earlier this year, was aimed at denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Since the cancellation, the North Koreans have softened their rhetoric, expressing an openness to salvage the meeting, and Kim held a surprise meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Saturday inside the Demilitarized Zone between their two nations.

Despite previously deciding to cancel the summit, it seems President Trump is too trying to save it by sending over U.S. officials into North Korea.

“Our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself. I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day. Kim Jong Un agrees with me on this. It will happen!” Trump tweeted on Sunday evening.

Here’s more, per Fox News:

“A U.S. delegation is in ongoing talks with North Korean officials at Panmunjom,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement about the meeting, reported first by The Washington Post. “We continue to prepare for a meeting between the President and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.”

“I think the president has got the North Koreans in a place that any other president might not have managed to get done,” [Republican Senator Roy] Blunt said. “He’s very willing to reach out in new directions through the South Korean president, willing to meet with the North Korean president but also willing to walk away.”

As Fox News reports, Jong-Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in meeting for a second time over the weekend caused some to suspect the meeting could still happen. The meeting “highlight[s] a sense of urgency on both sides of the world’s most heavily armed border,” the report said.
