Democrat golden girl Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is again making mainstream media headlines. After she was fact-checked hard by the Washington Post for a series of lines and misleading statements, she then decried conservative pundit Ben Shapiro for “cat calling” her (he offered to debate). These missteps probably did not help the young Democrat Socialist likely to become the next representative for New York’s 14th congressional district.
Now, the New York candidate is facing heat for her mishandling of a scheduled public event.
Public events should be by all accounts, just that, public. But Ocasio-Cortez has her own twist to a public event: barring the media and claiming coverage of her event would endanger or somehow harm attendees.

The Queens Chronicle, a local news outlet, reported that the campaign for the 28-year-old progressive prevented reporters from attending a campaign event in Corona on Sunday, even though it was open to the rest of the public. The campaign reportedly barred reporters from a prior event as well.
Ocasio-Cortez returned to her district after stumping for like-minded candidates across the country, even joining up with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. She became an overnight political sensation and a sought-after endorsement on the left upon defeating longtime Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s Democratic primary in June.
Here’s more on the ban, from the New York Post:
As part of a “listening tour,” she invited future constituents to a meeting in The Bronx on Aug. 8 and in Corona, Queens on Sunday.
But reporters — including from the local Queens Chronicle that specializes in covering such events — were barred.
— Advertisement — “Unless you were in the room on Sunday, you won’t know what specific community problems were mentioned or how Ocasio-Cortez planned to address them once she was sworn in,” Christopher Barca, one of the weekly’s editors, wrote afterward.
Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign manager, Vigie Ramos Riso, complained to the Chronicle that the candidate was “‘mobbed” by reporters” at a previous meeting even “though we said no Q&A and no one-on-one interviews” and that’s why the ban was instituted.
It was a public event closed off to the media… so a private event, right?

Then make it a private event. Don’t make it a public event and then ban the press.

Corbin Trent, Ocasio-Cortez campaign spokesman defended the decision, “We wanted to help create a space where community members felt comfortable and open to express themselves without the distraction of cameras and press. These were the first set of events where the press has been excluded. This is an outlier and will not be the norm. We’re still adjusting our logistics to fit Alexandria’s national profile.”
The candidate chimed in herself:
Our community is 50% immigrant. Folks are victims of DV, trafficking, + have personal medical issues.
This town hall was designed for residents to feel safe discussing sensitive issues in a threatening political time.
