Just Now: Trump Proposes Border Security Solution, Hits GOP Over Filibuster Rule

On Thursday morning, President Trump floated over social media exactly how he wants the immigration situation to be addressed.

His plan was proposed in a tweet where Trump criticized the hiring of additional judges for handling immigration cases. As the law stands, an immigrant caught illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border can claim asylum and can contest their legal status in a court hearing. The process has become more lengthy as judges are limited and the number of people waiting is increasing.

The president instead suggests that a border wall should be constructed and more immigration enforcement officers should be hired, which Trump assumes would prevent more people from entering the country and backlogging the system.

“We shouldn’t be hiring judges by the thousands, as our ridiculous immigration laws demand, we should be changing our laws, building the Wall, hire Border Agents and Ice and not let people come into our country based on the legal phrase they are told to say as their password,” Trump tweeted.

Trump again pointed blame at congressional Democrats who he claims are standing in the way of a legislative solution to better secure the border and help alleviate the problem of family separation along the border.

“The Border has been a big mess and problem for many years,” the president tweeted. “At some point, Schumer and Pelosi, who are weak on Crime and Border security, will be forced to do a real deal, so easy, that solves this long time problem. Schumer used to want Border security – now he’ll take Crime!”

Trump did, however, issue an Executive Order which intended to suspend the separation of children from their parents along the border.

Per CBS News:

President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to solve the issue of family separation at the border. The policy keeps in place key components of the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy of prosecuting illegal border crossings along the U.S-Mexico border. While the administration will continue prosecuting crimes of “improper entry,” the administration will “maintain family unity, including by detaining alien families together where appropriate and consistent with law and available resources,” according to the order’s text.

In a shift from previous policy, families will now be held together during the process of prosecution and deportation at the border.

“We are keeping families together and this will solve that problem,” Trump said during the signing ceremonny. “At the time we are keeping a very powerful border and it continues to be a zero tolerance, we have zero tolerance for people that enter our country illegally.”

“I didn’t like sight or the feeling of families being separated it’s a problem that’s gone on for many years, too many administrations,” he added, per the report.

“It’s the Democrats fault, they won’t give us the votes needed to pass good immigration legislation,” the president said in a tweet on Wednesday. “They want open borders, which breeds horrible crime. Republicans want security. But I am working on something – it never ends!”

Breitbart has more:

President Donald Trump’s new executive order on border enforcement all but restores the failed “catch-and-release” approach.
Though he proclaimed that he was continuing his “zero tolerance” policy, the government still cannot detain families for longer than 20 days due to the Flores decree — a law the media pretended, until now, did not exist.

The courts and Congress are unlikely to shift, meaning that illegal aliens with children will simply be let go.

This was a defeat brought about, quite literally, by fake news.

President Trump also hit back at Senate Republicans who have maintained an open debate process and kept the 60-vote minimum to overturn a filibuster. He argued Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should change the rule which has prevented the Senate from passing key pieces of legislation under Trump’s early presidency.

He tweeted that allowing the filibuster rule was “killing” Republicans, which could have some implications in the congressional elections in November.

“What is the purpose of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct (which they feel is good for them in the Mid-Terms). Republicans must get rid of the stupid Filibuster Rule-it is killing you!”

McConnell has shown no interest in discontinuing the filibuster rule which is typically awarded to the minority party. McConnell could, by himself, change the rules of debate (ending the filibuster rule) and would only need the approval of 51 members. As it stands, Senate Republicans have been unable to garner 51 votes on any recent legislative pieces.
