Pulling Out The Big Guns: Republicans Are Looking To Win Back Crucial Pennsylvania House Seat

President Trump and Vice President Pence have both taken to social media on Saturday to help support Republican candidate Keith Rothfus win back a crucial seat in the House of Representatives.

Earlier in the year, the 18th district of Pennsylvania unexpectedly flipped when Democrat Conor Lamb won over Republican Rick Saccone in a special election. After more than 230,000 votes were cast, Lamb won by about 750 votes. Trump won the same area by nearly 20 points in the 2016 presidential election.

The new contest will feature Rothfus, who has been a member of Congress since 2013 and represents the 12th district, square off with Lamb in the November general election to represent the state’s newly redrawn 17th district.

As Ballotpedia reports, the state’s congressional districts were redrawn after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court said the current map was illegal partisan gerrymandering. The court adopted a new map for 2018 and the two men are competing for the newly redrawn 17th District. The new district contains areas from the old 3rd, 12th, 14th, and 18th Districts.

“Rep. Keith Rothfus (R), who currently represents the old 12th District, and Conor Lamb (D), who won the old 18th District seat in a March 2018 special election, have both filed for the new 17th District seat. Rep. Matt Cartwright (D), the incumbent in the old 17th District, is running for re-election in the new 8th District,” Ballotpedia reports.

In a pair of tweets, Trump called the Republican “one of the finest men around” while criticizing his opponent, who he also gave a nickname.

“Pence is heading to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where we have both strongly endorsed one of the finest men around, Congressman Keith @RothfusForPA,” the president tweeted. “He is running against #LambTheSham, who is telling everyone how much he likes me, but he will only vote with Nancy Pelosi. Keith is strong on borders and tough on crime — and loves cutting taxes!”

“President @realDonaldTrump called it… when he said Conor Lamb would “only vote with Nancy Pelosi!” Now, Congressman Conor Lamb votes with the liberals in Congress nearly 90% of the time! The people of Western Pennsylvania deserve better! They deserve @RothfusForPA!”

The Cook Politico Book, and other polling sites rate Pennsylvania’s 17th district election as a toss-up where either party has a good chance of winning.
