On Tuesday afternoon, President Trump hosted a “Celebration of America” event at the White House. The event featured the playing of the National Anthem, “God Bless America,” as well as a number of other patriotic tunes.

“We love our country, we respect our flag and we always proudly stand for the national anthem. We always will stand for the National Anthem,” the president said at the event.

Trump then explained the importance of standing to show support for the National Anthem and those who have sacrificed to defend the right to do so.

“I want to take this opportunity to explain why young Americans stand for our National Anthem. Maybe it’s about time that we understood,” the president said. “We stand to honor our military and to honor our country and to remember the fallen heroes who never made it back home.”

As CBS News reports, Trump kept the new event focused on America and did not once mention the Eagles in his speech.

“We stand to show love for our fellow citizens and our magnificent Constitution. We stand to pay tribute to the incredible Americans who came before us and the heroic sacrifices they made,” Trump said. “America is a great nation, a community, a family. And America’s our home and we love our home, and our country has never done better than it’s doing right now. Never!”

“So we stand together for freedom. We stand together for patriotism. And we proudly stand for our glorious nation under God,” the president concluded the speech.

This celebration of the country and the Anthem took the place of a previously scheduled ceremony recognizing the Philadelphia Eagles for winning Super Bowl LII. The prior event was canceled as Trump rescinded the invitation.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president’s decision was a result of the Eagles franchise changing RSVP plans at the “eleventh hour.”

“The Eagles are the ones who tried to change their commitment at the eleventh hour… if this wasn’t a political stunt by the Eagles franchise, then they wouldn’t have planned to attend the event and then backed out at the last minute,” she said.

President Trump tweeted the event’s cancelation on Monday evening, citing the team’s interest in only sending a small number of people.

“We will proudly be playing the National Anthem and other wonderful music celebrating our Country today at 3 P.M., The White House, with the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus. Honoring America! NFL, no escaping to Locker Rooms!”
