Boycott Incoming… NIKE Just Signed Colin Kaepernick To Multi-Million Dollar Deal

Sports gear and clothing company Nike just chose the new face of their company: former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The public endorsement was quickly met with calls to protest the company from several people online.

According to reports, the company will be paying him several million each year as he is the face of their new “Just do it” campaign. The former quarterback will also receive his entire own line of athletic gear, shirts, jerseys, shorts, and shoes.

Kaepernick has not been hired back to the NFL since 2016 when he made popular the practice of protesting during the National Anthem. The move was widely viewed as disrespectful to the National Anthem, the American flag, and the military.

As Sports Center and senior NFL reporter for Yahoo Charles Robinson reports, Kaepernick was already under contract with Nike from his time in the NFL and has been since 2011. Facing pressure from other companies, Nike decided to form a new contract and extend Kaepernick’s presence with the company.

Robinson went on to say Kaepernick’s deal is on par with that of a top athlete and will include an entirely new line of products.

As BizPac Review reports, Nike is already receiving backlash over the decision.

Incoming boycott…

Per the report, Army veteran Kurt Schlichter questioned Kaepernick’s authenticity regarding the protests and called them “insulting” and “disrespectful.”

“In 27 years in the Army, I wore the American flag on my shoulder,” Schlichter said on Fox News. “Over two deployments, I was there when the flag covered the coffins of men we were burying. This disingenuous idea that Colin Kaepernick is just trying to make a statement is baloney.”

Schlichter continued: “He is targeting us [patriots and military veterans]. He knows what this means to us. He knows how insulting it is. He knows how disrespectful it is, and Nike is empowering it. This is scummy, this is lousy! This is rotten and I’m never buying another Nike product again. And I think millions of Americans are going to agree.”

And some people quickly did:

Many others commented in support for Kaepernick and Nike.

Bleacher Report reports Kaepernick has had a less-than-pleasant last few years with the NFL since being unable to be contracted by a team:

Kaepernick last played in the NFL in 2016 with the 49ers. During that season, he began protesting during the national anthem, telling NFL Network’s Steve Wyche in August 2016 he was “not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

More NFL players joined Kaepernick in protesting police brutality and social inequality.

After not securing a new contract with a team, Kaepernick filed a grievance in October 2017, saying the NFL and team owners colluded to keep him out of the league.

Kaepernick has met with several teams over this time, including the Seattle Seahawks, the Denver Broncos, and the Baltimore Ravens, but either was declined, personally rejected the offer, or was passed over due to drama from his girlfriend.
