Ben & Jerry’s Start Pro-Dem Ice Cream-Naming Contest, Conservatives Quickly Jump In

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream are uniting with MoveOn.org, a progressive public policy advocacy group and political action committee, in a new contest to name campaign-themed ice cream flavors.

The contest, which was announced Friday, is simple: Ben & Jerry’s is seeking the seven best ice cream flavors to help support Democrat congressional candidates across the country.

Here’s more on the campaign, per Politico:

The effort — called Ben and Jerry (the people, not the corporation) Take Back Congress, Flavor by Flavor — asks voters to invent ice cream names and flavors inspired by the seven Democratic candidates. Then, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, who spearheaded a similar effort for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2016, will make a limited, homemade batch of each flavor and raffle off the pints to supporters. MoveOn.org will also send fundraising pitches for each of the candidates as part of the contest.

The endorsed candidates include: Jess King, the challenger facing Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.); Ammar Campa-Najjar, who’s running against Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.); Lauren Underwood, who’s challenging Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Ill.); Aftab Pureval, running against Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio); J.D. Scholten, the Democrat facing King in Iowa; James Thompson, who’s running against Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kan.); and Stephany Rose Spaulding, who’s challenging Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.).

Though the ice cream company is looking to help Democrat candidates, conservatives have hijacked the contest and made some pretty hilarious flavors.

Here’s a few from some people online: Snowflake Sensation, Email Scrubby Hubby, Strawberry Spartacus, Leftist Salted Caramel Tears, Long & Whiny Road Praline, and “Did you just assume this flavor?”

“We need a Democratic majority to check President Trump’s unrestrained power,” Ben & Jerry’s said in a press release on MoveOn.org’s website, as Washington Times reports. “And we also need to send progressive champions to Congress who will fix our health care system with Medicare for All, protect clean air and water, and get big money out of politics.”

And, “This is our way of honoring some of the best up-and-coming progressive champions across the country.”

“But we need your help!” the press release continued. “We need to come up with seven amazing ice cream flavors (and flavor names) that not only taste great but also capture the essence of what each candidate stands for.”
