Whoa! New California Law Could Give Illegal Immigrants The Right To Vote

A new California state law, which is set to be implemented in April, will reportedly allow the opportunity for illegal immigrants to vote.

Under the new California law, when someone renews their driver’s license they are then registered to vote; a current California law grants a driver’s license to those in their state without proof of citizenship.

See any problems here?

Per Fox News:

California this spring will begin automatically registering adults who obtain or renew a driver’s license to vote, including potentially large numbers of noncitizens and immigrants illegally living in the state.

The only way drivers who say they are legal won’t have their information sent to state voter rolls under the latest implementation of the California Motor Voter Act is if they opt out — which opens the door to the potential of widespread voter fraud, according to critics of the plan.

“You’re setting the state up for a disaster. They don’t seem to have a process in place to verify that people are who they say they are. It’s a free-for-all, a process that can be manipulated,” said Catherine Engelbrecht, founder of True the Vote, a national organization that unsuccessfully pressed Gov. Jerry Brown to veto the law allowing automatic voter registration.

Conservative Tribune has more:

According to Courthouse News, Californians who renew their driver’s license by mail will be registered to vote as part of a settlement of California’s alleged violations of the National Voting Rights Act of 1993.

The U.K. Daily Mail reports that the law was originally passed in 2015. The problem arises when you consider that California allows individuals to get a driver’s license with no questions about citizenship or legal status in the United States, according to WND.

California state officials argue that their state has “firewalls” and other methods of preventing the system to be abused by those in the country illegally from participating in elections:

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla told the newspaper in 2015 that there are protections for this, noting that there is a special process for those who aren’t in the country legally to get a driver’s license, and those applicants would not be registered to vote.

“We’ve built the protocols and the firewalls to not register people that aren’t eligible,” Padilla said. “We’re going to keep those firewalls in place.”

Critics of the law argue that even with these prevention tools, illegals immigrants could still vote and it would be “impossible” to determine whether California was allowing those in the country illegally to vote:

When the law was originally passed in 2015, “Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy said that “critics warn the measure could add millions of illegal people to the rolls because the state allows undocumented aliens to get driver’s licenses.”

Judge Andrew Napolitano agreed.

“You may not even know that when you get your driver’s license you’re also being registered to vote. And there’s no requirement of proof of citizenship,” he said. “All 50 states limit voting to citizens except when the state allows you to sort of sneak in without proving your citizenship by getting a driver’s license instead.”

“It’s almost impossible to monitor this if the state is going to provide shelter for illegals to vote,” Napolitano added.
