‘Why Is Nancy Pelosi Getting Paid When People Who Are Working Are Not?’

President Trump wants to know why members of Congress, specifically House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are getting paid amid a government shutdown while more than 800,000 other federal workers are being forced to go without pay.

“Why is Nancy Pelosi getting paid when people who are working are not?” he tweeted.

The tweet undoubtedly swiped the Democrat Party leader for failing to pass a bill which fully funds the government and includes $5.7 billion for the construction of a new border wall—all the while receiving a paycheck.

The tweet may have also been a jab at those congressional Democrats who are visiting Puerto Rico while the federal shutdown enters a record-long 24th day.

From Fox News:

Despite a partial government shutdown with no end in sight, about 30 Democratic members of Congress traveled to Puerto Rico this weekend — with their families and lobbyists — for a winter retreat where they also planned to see a special performance of the hit Broadway show “Hamilton.”

Those attending the Congressional Hispanic Caucus BOLD PAC gathering in San Juan also planned to meet Saturday with Puerto Rican officials to discuss ongoing cleanup efforts from Hurricane Maria, according to a report.

“This year’s winter retreat promises to be our most widely attended yet with over 220 guests, including 39 Members of Congress and CHC BOLD PAC supporters expected to attend and participate!” a planning memo said.

As the Hill reports, this is the largest delegation of Democrats to visit the U.S. territory as 36 members left the nation’s capital to attend the Latino Victory Fund summit.

From the report:

President Trump lambasted the Democratic trip in a tweet Monday morning and then again while speaking to reporters.

“A lot of the Democrats were in Puerto Rico celebrating something. I don’t know, maybe they’re celebrating the shutdown,” Trump said outside the White House before going to speak at an event in New Orleans. “We have a very big crisis, a humanitarian crisis on the border. Everybody knows it, they know it.”

Part of the criticism also centered on the fact that actor and producer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s original-cast run of his hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” premiered over the weekend when lawmakers were visiting.

President Trump remained at the White House over Christmas, New Year’s, and has expressed that he plans to remain ready in the Oval Office to sign a bill into law that will reopen the government.
