During an interview on “The Firing Line with Margaret Hoover,” California Democratic Congressman and House Intelligence Committee member Eric Swalwell claimed that President Trump is “an agent of Russia.”
The claim fell flat as host Margaret Hoover repeatedly asked the potential 2020 Democratic candidate to cite real evidence—hard facts, not circumstantial evidence.
“At what point do you draw the line and not accuse the president of the United States without any evidence of being an agent of Russia?” the host asked.
“Yeah, he’s betraying our country,” answered Swalwell, who served as a former prosecutor for 7 years.
Hoover quickly jumped in: “We want evidence before you say that, but you said an agent of Russia.”
“He is working on their behalf,” Swalwell responded, pointing to President Trump’s meeting in Helsinki, Finland with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As a result of the meeting, the California congressman contends, Trump has pulled troops from Syria, sought to pull the US out of NATO, and has eased sanctions on Russia.
The host noted that Swalwell conveniently left out other evidence: “He [Trump] passed sanctions against Russia, he has armed the Ukraine, he has killed 200 Russians in Syria. I mean those aren’t the actions of an agent of Russia either.”
The congressman opined that Trump only “begrudgingly” signed the sanctions into law
Hoover pressed Swalwell again and asked plainly: “What makes him an agent of Russia though?”
After Swalwell explains interactions between Russian entities and Trump campaign associates. He did not explicitly name Trump except for saying that Trump calling for Russia to hack the DNC. After a while, the host concludes none of the evidence sufficiently argues the case that Trump is working for the Russians.

Some people online immediately piled in on Swalwell:
This is not the first time Swalwell has pushed the line that “Trump is a Russian agent,” as Newsweek reports just last week he was making the same claim during an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews:
Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, of California, in an interview Tuesday claimed that President Donald Trump has “betrayed” his country and has been knowingly working to promote Russian interests.
Swalwell, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, told MSNBC’s Hardball host Chris Matthews that the president “knows exactly what he’s doing” in pushing the Kremlin’s agenda.
“He is acting every step like someone who wanted to work for the Russians and who has betrayed our country and put them first every single time,” Swalwell told Matthews.
Swalwell, who also serves on the House Judiciary Committee, further criticized Trump for publicly calling on Russian hackers to target Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, and the president’s recent decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, where Russian-backed President Bashar al-Assad has long called for an end to U.S. involvement.
“I don’t even think it’s unwittingly, I think he knows exactly what he’s doing,” remarked Swalwell of the president, alleging that Trump is acting “on behalf of the Russians.”
Swalwell has also repeatedly advocated against increased border security. In a tweet earlier this week, the Democrat implied the country should use the security system around the Capitol to protect its borders.
