Former Congressman Trey Gowdy set the record straight after former FBI Director James Comey appeared on a CNN town hall.
After the town hall, Gowdy—a firebrand who has built a following within conservative circles—gave an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity where he mocked “Saint James Comey” and his “moral arrogance.”
From BizPac Review:
The fired FBI chief gave “pretty much the same energy as any other interview,” Gowdy told guest host Jason Chaffetz. “He is always right. He gets to write the moral script.”
The former federal prosecutor blasted Comey for his attack on outgoing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, saying he did not have a “strong character.”
“I think people like that, like Rod Rosenstein, who are people of accomplishment but not real sterling character, strong character, find themselves trapped. And then they start telling themselves a story to justify their being trapped which is, ‘Yeah, he’s awful but the country needs me,’” Comey told host Anderson Cooper at the live event.
Gowdy said Comey was ignorant on how the whole investigation into Trump even started, claiming he never read some of the initializing documents.
“When I asked Jim Comey how did the Russia investigation get started, who started it, he didn’t know it was Peter Strzok, he never read the initiation document,” he said. “Comey refuses to believe that any of these decisions should be looked at, so he is always right. Everybody else is wrong.”
“He and [former Director of National Intelligence James] Clapper and [former CIA Director John] Brennan are validating the concerns that other people including the president have had about their objectivity by their comments and their demeanor after they left their offices,” Gowdy continued.
Gowdy was not the only Republican to tear into the former FBI director as former Utah Congresswoman Jason Chaffetz said his comments were inappropriate.
Republican Congressman Devin Nunes also said he “just makes a mockery of the entire FBI and the Department of Justice.”
“The former FBI director is not a stupid man and he’s acting awfully stupid,” Nunes said via BizPac Review. “He could do a town hall and make a lot of things up, but look, I think Mr. Comey is in a lot of trouble and he should be. He made a mess of the FBI.”Note: The author of this article has included commentary that expresses an opinion and analysis of the facts.
