When Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed the legislation into law that effectively bans all abortions across her state, people on the Left were outraged. Many of them expressed their disapproval online, including a particularly red hot take from Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The New York lawmaker said she disagreed whole-heartedly with the new law, but for several reasons which are not included in the law itself.
BizPac Review reports:
In a ridiculous tweet, AOC falsely claimed that women who get abortions under the new Alabama law would be jailed. That is 100% false.
It is the abortion providers that would face criminal sanctions. Under NO circumstance would mothers who abort their babies be prosecuted.
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Alabama lawmakers are making all abortions a felony punishable with jail time, including women victimized by rape and incest. Of course, no added punishments for rapists. It’s going to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk. She will decide the future of women’s rights in Alabama.”
“First of all, rape is already against the law, so rapists do get punished,” BizPac Review responded. “And if a rapist murders a pregnant woman’s baby, he would be prosecuted for rape and for murder (of the unborn baby) in 38 states.”
Ocasi-Cortez’s tweet spurred a particularly testy exchange with One America News reporter Liz Wheeler.
In a tweet, Wheeler argued the letter of the law and accurately contended the law would never penalize a women for receiving an abortion.
“It’d never be a felony for women. Period,” Wheeler tweeted in a response to the New York Democrat. “It’s despicable to use victims of child rape as justification for 1 million abortions every year…because you Dems aren’t seeking exemption for rape/incest. You want all abortion legal always.”
Ocasio-Cortez then changed her argument completely and instead insisted a woman in the situation could be penalized, if the physician is a woman. This point was never in contention as Ocasio-Cortez and Wheeler were initially talking about the woman receiving the abortion.
Ocasio Cortez answered back: “Actually it *would* be a felony for women – if those women are medical providers. See? According to your own semantic standard, you ‘lied.’ We can fact-check obvious semantics all day and make absurd bad faith claims if that’s how you want be. But I have better uses for my time.”
“Abortion is a death sentence for innocent unborn women, do you care?” Wheeler pressed. “This is what leftstis do: when they’re trapped in their lies they claim “bad faith” as an excuse to run away. Instead, why don’t you answer this: when does life begin? And what right do we have to end that life?”
The congresswoman later added: “Abortion bans aren’t just about controlling women’s bodies. They’re about controlling women’s sexuality. Owning women. From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, US religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology.”Note: The author of this article has included commentary that expresses an opinion and analysis of the facts.
