As President Trump and congressional lawmakers continue to debate how to handle influxes of migrants coming to and through the southern border, Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has been a staunch supporter of immigrants seeking access to the United States through her brief time in office, took to Twitter with a hot take that legal migrants ought to support those who were previously in their plight.
Ocasio-Cortez said she thinks it’s ironic that migrants who traveled into the country through legal means oppose illegal immigration, tweeting: “Gotta love the rich irony of people who fondly recount stories of how their family’s last names were changed on Ellis Island after their relatives snuck onto a boat escaping some horror now taking fervent anti-immigrant stances & branding innocent human beings as ‘illegal.’”
Several people who responded to the tweet disagreed with the congresswoman on a number of her sentiments, including that people were arriving through Ellis Island illegally.
“Err… where to start?” Twitchy responded to the tweet.
