2020 Presidential Candidate Tells MSNBC Trump Should Face Death Penalty Over Ukraine Controversy

Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, who is seeking the Republican nomination in the 2020 presidential election, told MSNBC’s Elise Jordan on Monday that President Trump was guilty of committing treason. And, as a result, should be lethally executed.

This claim is even a step further than some Democrats are even willing to take but the MSNBC political analyst carefully allowed Weld to clarify his position.

The Daily Caller reports Weld’s claim centers around the current controversy with President Trump’s phone conversation with the Ukrainian president and what Weld claims was “about pressuring a foreign country to interfere with and control a U.S. election.”

Jordan pressed further: “You went a little bit further than just impeachment in your prior comments. And I just want to continue with that a bit. You said that Donald Trump has committed treason, and the penalty for treason under American law, is death.”

“What’s the legal framework here? Have you looked into this? How do you see this proceeding?” she asked.

“Talk about pressuring a foreign country to interfere with and control a U.S. election, it couldn’t be clearer. And that’s not just undermining democratic institutions, that is treason. It’s treason, pure and simple. And the penalty for treason under the U.S. code is death. That’s the only penalty,” Weld continued per Mediaite. “The penalty under the Constitution is removal from office and that might look like a pretty good alternative to the president if he can work out a plea deal.”

The former Massachusetts governor said the legal framework was the impeachment process in the Constitution. Weld claimed Trump was guilty of committing “treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

“Well, the legal framework is under the U.S. criminal code,” Weld answered per the report. “The only penalty for treason is death. It spelled out in the statute. Under the Constitution, as you know, grounds for removal from office, impeachment, and removal from any federal office, are treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. We don’t have to worry about bribery anymore, although I think he’s committed that, we don’t have to worry about other high crimes and misdemeanors, although I think he committed many. He’s such a lawless man.”

“We’ve got treason. And we don’t have to dribble around the court. We can go right for the hoop,” he claimed. “It’s well past time for this guy, in my opinion, to be carted off to save us all. He’s daring us all to let him be totally lawless.”

The Daily Caller reports:

Weld responded again by noting that “the only penalty for treason is death,” doubling down on his thought that Trump needs “to be carted off to save us all.”

“We have treason,” Weld said after Jordan noted she wanted to continue to see what he meant with his rhetoric. “We can go right for the hoop.”

A whistleblower complaint reportedly stated that Trump asked Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter during a phone call.

Trump denied the allegations, calling them “highly partisan,” suggesting Biden was the one who tried to influence a Ukrainian prosecutor into not investigating his son’s company.
