Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unveiled her newest legislative push which she claims would aim to create “a just society.”
The plan, literally called “A Just Society,” was introduced on Wednesday morning as “her biggest policy package since the Green New Deal” and include a 6-part plan.
Each of the parts includes its own bill to change various aspects of the social and political landscape of the country designed to “chip away at our issues of economic injustice.”
“Big day!” Ocasio-Cortez said in a tweet on Wednesday morning. “We’re rolling out our next major project: A Just Society.”
The tweet included a video of her explaining the plans in more detail.
In the video, the New York Congresswoman identifies different goals of alleviating people from poverty: firstly, recognizing those actually living in poverty across the country and giving the federal government more power to help these people.
She describes giving more people in poverty access to public housing and penalizing landlords which unfairly raise their rates. The Democratic congresswoman said she would also change current criminal conviction laws to re-integrate those with felonious histories so they can attain housing options.
The bills — packaged as a bundle called “A Just Society” — would expand access to benefits by updating the federal poverty line to include expenses like child care and Internet access and be adjusted based on where someone lives. About 40 million Americans live in poverty, according to the U.S. Census.
“I think one of the things that that we can get done is build popular support in acknowledging how bad the problem already is. In doing so we can actually begin to fundamentally address those problems,” Ocasio-Cortez told NPR’s Steve Inskeep. “If we can acknowledge how many Americans are actually in poverty I think that we can start to address some of the more systemic issues in our economy.”
