AOC And ‘The Squad’ Endorse Bernie Sanders In 2020

Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is following her colleague, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in endorsing Senator Bernie Sanders to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2020.

Despite both congresswomen claiming there ought to be more women and minorities represented at all levels of government, they voiced their support for Sanders over his Black, gay, or female contenders.

The endorsement was made shortly after Sanders debated alongside 11 other Democratic candidates during the fourth Democratic debates in Ohio.

“Proud to endorse @SenSanders for President, glad that @AOC and @RashidaTlaib are on board too. It’s time,” Omar tweeted early on Wednesday morning.

[email protected] isn’t fighting to win just one presidential election — he’s fighting for the soul of our democracy,” she added in a later tweet which included a video of her explaining why she was backing Sanders.

The Washington Examiner reports Omar and Sanders have worked together during her brief time in Congress, over the summer, on a bill to eliminate college student loans.

“Corporations have repeatedly gotten bailouts and tax breaks. We need a bailout for the people — that’s why I just introduced a piece of legislation with Senator Bernie Sanders to cancel all student debt in our country,” she tweeted in June of this year.

The Washington Examiner adds:

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren was the other candidate some believed Ocasio-Cortez might support, but her backing may have swung to Sanders after Warren disavowed democratic socialism, a movement both Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders support.

Sanders has seen his support lag in recent weeks, while Warren has passed him in the polls. The three liberal congresswomen are popular among the party’s Left-wing, a section of the electorate both Warren and Sanders appeal to.
