On Monday afternoon, President Trump hosted an impromptu press conference at the White House for the military service dog credited for helping take down former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Conan, a Belgian Malinois, was honored for his efforts at the White House by President Trump, Vice President Pence, and First Lady Melania.
The heroic dog sat next to the trio in the Rose Garden where Trump heaped praised on him for the successful mission, the Washington Examiner reports.

“So, this is Conan. Right now, probably the world’s most famous dog,” Trump said. “Conan was very badly hurt, as you know, and they thought maybe he was not going to recover, but he recovered actually very quickly and has since gone on very important raids.”
“We just gave Conan a medal and a plaque, and I actually think Conan knew exactly what was going on,” the president continued, standing next to Conan, who was sitting obediently.
“The dog is incredible,” Trump added.
The president also called Conan “the ultimate fighter.”
As the presser was ending and the president, vice president and first lady turned to walk into the White House, a member of the media asked whether Melania would adopt the dog for Baron, her and Trump’s son. The group laughed as they continued walking away. Trump commended once more that Conan is a “good boy.”
The Washington Examiner reports: “Trump had considered giving the canine a Purple Heart, an honor bestowed upon troops who have been wounded or killed in combat.”
According to the report, however, such a medal cannot be given to a war dog due to Defense Department regulations. One dog, “Chip” in 1943, was awarded the Purple Heart for his efforts in WWII but the department has since changed their policies.
