Trump Doubles Down: ‘This Was An Attempted Overthrow… They Got Caught Red-Handed!’

President Trump is not happy with the release of a new Inspector General report which detailed the origins of the Russian probe. The report identified more than a dozen inconsistencies and instances of the FBI omitting information, causing the president to express his frustrations.

Reuters reports Inspector General Michael Horowitz “found numerous errors but no evidence of political bias by the FBI when it opened an investigation into contacts between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia in 2016.”

Trump called the report “an embarrassment” and said the FBI acted in a “dishonest” manner, ABC News reports. He also said it was “a very sad day.”

Responding to questions from a group of reporters at the White House, the president continued in his criticisms: “It’s a disgrace what’s happened with respect to the things that were done to our country. It should never again happen to another president.”

ABC News reports:

The Justice Department’s internal watchdog found the Russia investigation was not improper, despite significant allegations of wrongdoing in how agents handled the counterintelligence probe of Trump’s presidential campaign.

Trump labeled the investigation an “attempted overthrow” of the government.

“It was concocted, and you say what you want, that was probably something that’s never happened in the history of our country,” Trump said.

On Tuesday morning, President Trump took to Twitter to continue airing his grievances.

“You have to look at the 17 instances of misconduct cited in the Report, they are very bad. The FISA Court was clearly taken for a ride on this, a failure of the FBI up and down the chain of command. It’s about as strong a medicine as I’ve seen in a report of this kind in a very long time,” the president tweeted.

“The FBI has had some dark day in its past, but nothing like this. This was VERY SERIOUS MISCONDUCT ON THE PART OF THE FBI,” Trump added. “Are you listening Comey, McCabe, lovers Lisa & Peter, the beautiful Ohr family, Brennan, Clapper & many more?”

Shortly after the report’s release, ABC Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas held an exclusive broadcast interview with FBI Director Christopher Wray to discuss its conclusions. The president responded to the interview as well.

“I don’t know what report current Director of the FBI Christopher Wray was reading, but it sure wasn’t the one given to me. With that kind of attitude, he will never be able to fix the FBI, which is badly broken despite having some of the greatest men & women working there!”

According to ABC News, the president is looking forward to the release of a forthcoming report from Attorney General William Barr which will lay out a differing conclusion to the I.G. report.

From ABC News:

Even as the president sought to characterize Monday’s findings as a bombshell, he also teased a separate, forthcoming report from a U.S. attorney appointed by Attorney General William Barr to look at the conduct of intelligence agency officials who initiated the counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign.

The attorney, John Durham, said in a statement Monday that even though his investigation was ongoing, based on the evidence his team had collected so far, “last month we advised the Inspector General that we do not agree with some of the report’s conclusions as to predication and how the FBI case was opened.”

Trump said Monday that he believed Durham’s report would prove more significant.

“I look forward to the Durham report, which is this information plus plus plus,” he said. “I’m going to put this down as one of our great achievements.”
