‘That Would Be Big’: Trump Thanks Dem. Rep Jeff Van Drew For Switching Parties Amid Impeachment

President Trump reached out to Democratic Congressman Jeff Van Drew amid reports he is switching political parties.

Van Drew cited the partisan nature of the ongoing impeachment process as his reason for leaving Democrats and joining President Trump and Republicans.

“Wow, that would be big. Always heard Jeff is very smart!” tweeted Trump, who met privately with the New Jersey lawmaker on Friday.

“Thank you for your honesty Jeff. All of the Democrats know you are right, but unlike you, they don’t have the ‘guts’ to say so!” he added in another tweet.

Politico reports Van Drew is a moderate Democrat who strongly opposes the ongoing impeachment effort is “one of two Democrats who voted against opening the impeachment inquiry into Trump and has remained against the effort, even as the House prepares to vote to impeach the president next week.”

The report adds:

Van Drew’s congressional, campaign staff and other members of the New Jersey delegation were informed he was planning to switch parties on Saturday, according to Democratic sources. The question now was when, not if, Van Drew was joining the Republican Party, according to several Democrats with knowledge of the ongoing conversations.
