Kamala Harris: No, You Can’t Keep Your Own Doctor…Or Your Guns…Or Your Wall

Democrat Senator and presidential candidate Kamala Harris is breaking out of the gates with a quick-driven, hard-hitting leftist agenda that could look to set the pace for her fellow Democrat candidates.

During a CNN TownHall, Harris shared a handful of policy initiatives which included gun restrictions, ending the private healthcare system, and stopping President Trump from constructing a new border wall.

On guns, Harris said—via the Washington Post:

Sen. Kamala D. Harris, the California Democrat and presidential aspirant, lamented on Monday the lack of congressional action on gun control, saying a solution would have been possible after the 2012 massacre of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., if only lawmakers had been placed in “a locked room, no press, no one, nobody else” and required to examine “the autopsy photographs of those babies.”

“And then, you vote your conscience,” she said at a CNN town hall in Des Moines. “This has become a political issue.”

Applause rang out as she added, “There is no reason why we cannot have reasonable gun safety laws in this country.”

On Healthcare, Harris said she would not allow people the opportunity to keep their own doctors.

“To reiterate, you support the Medicare for all bill, initially co-sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders, you’re also a co-sponsor. I believe it will totally eliminate private insurance. So, for people out there who like their insurance, they don’t get to keep it?” CNN’s Jake Tapper asked, via BizPac Review.

“Well, listen, the idea is that everyone gets access to medical care. And you don’t have to go through the process of going through an insurance company, having them give you approval, going through the paperwork, all of the delay that may require,” Harris answered.

“Who among us has not had that situation? Where you got to wait for approval, and the doctor says, ‘Well I don’t know if your insurance company is going to cover this,’” she continued.

“Let’s eliminate all of that. Let’s move on,” Harris added.

And, on the border wall—via USA Today:

Harris answered the question about whether she would approve funding for a border wall if DACA recipients were given permanent protection.

“I’m not going to vote for a wall under any circumstances,” she said, adding that she supports border security in the form of upgraded infrastructure and technology.

The question of the wall came after Harris met a DACA recipient who asked how Harris would protect DACA recipients and their families. Harris said she would work to fulfill the promise of protecting DACA recipients from deportation and criticized Trump’s for his treatment of those in the program.

“We should not be trading on your life for the sake of the political games that this president is playing in trying to vilify young people like you who are doing nothing except being productive and believing in and living the American dream,” she told a DACA recipient in attendance.
