Former Vice President and potential 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden has all but spelled doom for Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.
Northam continues to face rising pressure to resign amid a week of controversies.
Earlier in the week, Northam made headlines for voicing his support for fourth-trimester or post-birth abortions. The abortion procedure occurs after the baby is delivered and is commonly referred to as infanticide.
Many people in the pro-life community were shocked by the comments and responded to the governor. Northam said he was misinterpreted, offering very little in the way of an apology or a defense of the comments.
The governor’s week went from bad to worse, TownHall reports, after it was learned a photo on his Eastern Virginia Medical School showed him either dressed in blackface or KKK clothing.
From the report:
Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam is having a disastrous week. He stepped in it with appalling remarks about late-term abortion. He doubled down, saying he had no regrets, even though many thought he was advocating for straight up infanticide; Virginia Democrats were pushing a bill that would have permitted abortions virtually up until the moment of birth. It was similar to the law New York passed. It’s ghastly. It’s immoral. It’s wrong. And it was rejected.
Then, a yearbook photo of Northam from his days at medical school surfaced. The 1984 Virginia Eastern Medical School photo shows Northam’s page with two men wearing racist costumes, one is wearing blackface while the other is in full-blown Ku Klux Klan. Northam apologized last night, admitting that he was in the photo, but didn’t specify which person.
Dozens of lawmakers are demanding the governor to resign amid the comments, which now includes Joe Biden—widely considered to be the leader of the Democrat Party.
“There is no place for racism in America. Governor Northam has lost all moral authority and should resign immediately, Justin Fairfax is the leader Virginia needs now,” Biden said as NBC News reports.
After apologizing on Friday for the photo, Northam reportedly did a 180 and claims it is not him.
“Virginia Governor Ralph Northam now denies appearing in a racist photograph that he on Friday apologized for, and claims he can prove it wasn’t him Senator Louise Lucas said Saturday,” Daily Mail reports.
